Cabbage Leaf Extract Can Help Relieve Arthritis Pain

Our patients have been telling us how cabb dab has worked wonders to help relieve their muscle and joint pain due to arthritis, injury, or due to activities of everyday living. One study published in 2016 in the Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice journal, investigated the use of cabbage leaf wraps in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The study involved 40 participants with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis who applied cabbage leaf wraps to their knees for one hour daily for two weeks. The researchers reported a significant improvement in pain and function in the intervention (cabbage) group compared to the control (no cabbage) group. Another study, published in 2012 the Journal of Clinical Nursing, investigated the use of cabbage leaf applications to reduce pain and hardness associated with subcutaneous heparin injections for prevention of blood clots. The study found a significant reduction in pain and hardness in the cabbage leaf group compared to the control group. Cabbage worked to reduce their pain and lessen the inflammation in the affected area. 

A randomized controlled clinical trial evaluating the efficacy of cabbage leaf wraps was published in 2016 in the Clinical Journal of Pain. The researchers found cabbage leaf wraps were significantly more effective than usual care in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis in terms of pain reduction, functional improvement, and quality of life. 

A study published in 2018 in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found a significant decrease in pain and inflammation and fluid in the knee in the cabbage leaf wrap group versus the control (no cabbage leaf wrap) group. They concluded that applying cabbage to injured knees, especially in the first 24 hours, can greatly lessen pain and inflammation and increase fluid uptake.
